Welcome to Key Stage 1

KS1 refers to Years 1 and 2 of primary school, typically for children aged 5–7. It follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception) and introduces more formal learning across a range of subjects.

Children study English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Art, Design & Technology, Music, Physical Education (PE), and Computing. They also begin to learn about relationships, wellbeing, and citizenship through PSHE using the Jigsaw PSHE program.

Yes, children are given regular homework in KS1, which includes reading, spelling, and simple maths activities. We aim to keep it manageable and purposeful to support learning at home.

Teachers continually assess children through observation, classwork, and informal assessments. In Year 1, children take a Phonics Screening Check, and in Years 1 & 2, they complete assessments in reading, writing and maths and Multiple Choice Questionnaires (MCQs) in other subjects.

Reading regularly with your child, practising spellings and number bonds, and talking about their day can make a big difference. Your child’s teacher can also suggest specific ways to help at home.

We offer targeted support for children who may need extra help, whether academically or emotionally. This can include small group work, tailored interventions, or support from our SEN (Special Educational Needs) team if needed.

Children follow a structured but varied timetable including phonics, English and maths in the morning, and foundation subjects in the afternoon. Break times and outdoor play are built in to support wellbeing and social development.
